3 Simple Ways to Elevate Your Holiday Decor
Decorating your home is the best way to set the mood for the holiday season!
Today I'm sharing 3 simple tips for curating a collection of classic decor and creating a cohesive, elegant look for the holidays!
1. Design Around a Classic Color Palette
Choosing your color palette is the first step to decorating your home for the holidays. Yes, red and green are iconic but try not to overdo it. Instead, consider a neutral palette with wood and metal accents for a nature-infused look that will never go out of style. If you want to add a pop of color, choose one color and apply it in small amounts throughout your home for a cohesive look.
Pro tip: Use fresh (or high-quality faux) greenery with white lights as the basis for your color palette. Your tree, garland, wreaths, and vase fillers should make up at least 60% of your holiday decor.
2. Invest in Quality Materials for a Curated Vibe
The materials you choose are an essential part of your palette. Staying with a neutral base palette and investing in quality pieces will ensure you won't have to start all over next year.
Choose natural materials that will stand the test of time, such as wood, metal, glass, and ceramics. Select 2 or 3 of these elements and start by decorating your tree to set the tone. Then repeat those materials throughout your home for a curated vibe.
Pro tip: Your palette does not have to be colorful to be festive. You can create interest timelessly by mixing materials. Have fun mixing metals - bronze, silver, and brass for a classic, sophisticated look that will never get old!
3. Style Your Space in 3 Steps
Step 1: Start with greenery and lights. This will become the basis of your palette. Place garland (strung with white lights) throughout your home - entryways, stair railings, console tables, fireplace mantle, windowsill, etc.
Step 2: Choose your colors/materials to create the accents in your palette. Use the entire palette as the theme for your tree decor. (For example, wood, brass, and mercury glass).
Step 3: Then, choose decorative objects that incorporate these materials and place them in groups throughout your home. It could be just those places where you've chosen to place greenery, garland, etc.
When choosing decorative objects to purchase, look for items sold in pairs or trios. (For example, brass candle holders or white ceramic trees). Repetition is a highly effective design technique! When repeating or grouping similar things, be sure there is some variance in height. Consider a group of 3, 5 or 7 of the same objects (in varying sizes) along your mantle, console table, or dining table to achieve a simplistic elegance that is easy on the eyes.
Pro tip: Place one of the objects on a stack of books or a decorative box when you need to emphasize the height.
Remember, decorating for the holidays can be simple. Invest in quality pieces that can be reused year after year. If you use fresh greenery and white lights as your base and stick to your palette, you will be able to create a tasteful, classic, and elegant home this holiday season!
