Our 6 Favorite Eye-Catching Interior Design Trends for 2023

Style trends come and go. But when a trend serves a purpose or fulfills a need —it has longevity. As we evolve, we continue to find ways to improve the way we live in our homes. At Design to Elevate, how you live in your home plays a significant factor in how we design your space.

So today, I'm focusing on how design is evolving and the exciting changes we will see in the coming year!

These 6 design shifts focus on how you can feel better in your home, and convey your personal style...

1. Natural Materials & Organic Forms

It's certainly no surprise that wellness is a driving factor of design for 2023. At Design to Elevate, we don’t view this as a trend but more of a necessity when designing our homes. Adding elements that help promote relaxation and self-care can bring a sense of peace to your home, for example: a reading nook, a fireplace, meditation space, soaking tub, yoga room, etc.

We are seeing a strong desire to move the outside in, which can reconnect us with nature and inspire well-being. As a result, there is a renewed appreciation for incorporating natural materials in our homes, like stone, natural woods and fabrics, and live plants.

We will also see shapes, colors, and textures inspired by nature. Earth tones and curvaceous furniture pieces are becoming more popular. These trends towards softer, organic forms and infusing elements of nature in our interior environments can bring us comfort year round.

Read our blog "Designing a Home with Wellness in Mind" to learn more about incorporating natural materials and inspiring wellness in your home.

2. Investing in Quality over Quantity

We slowed down in the last couple of years and spent more time at home. As a result, we became more aware of our surroundings and our need for high-quality, functioning pieces in our homes. By investing in quality pieces that stand the test of time, we are also helping our environment by reducing waste.

Sustainability is a growing trend, and we will see that reflected in our homes. We live in a world where goods are produced faster and cheaper than ever, so it's refreshing to see a movement away from the disposable decor.

Quality is becoming more valued, and we are choosing more meaningful and timeless pieces. In addition, there is a new appreciation for hand-made artisan elements, mixing old and new, repurposing vintage pieces, and small batch production.

At Design to Elevate, we strongly believe in "less is more.” Making fewer, finer choices results in a design that is purposeful and lasting!

3. Wine Displays & Coffee Bars In Unconventional Spaces

Coffee and wine...two of my favorite things ;)

Instead of hiding your wine in a basement cellar, homeowners now bring it out to display. Consider displaying your collection as a feature in your home. Are you limited on space? It could be a wall in your dining room, or you could turn a closet into a wine display case with glass doors and back-lit shelves to show off your favorite bottles of vino.

Coffee Bars are also showing up in unexpected places. Of course, dedicated space for coffee machines, storage, refrigeration, and even a bar sink, is nothing new. However, we are getting requests for them in less-expected locations, like home offices and bedrooms.

Wouldn't having a coffee or cocktail bar in your bedroom be the ultimate luxury? Imagine sipping on a glass of wine before you curl up in bed to watch a movie or waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning, without ever leaving the comfort of your bedroom.

4. Bold Marble & Daring Patterns

There is no denying the elegance and natural beauty of marble. When I think of timeless materials, my mind instantly goes to marble. So with a revived appreciation for natural materials, it's no surprise that marble is the preferred countertop choice for 2023.

We love marble because each piece is unique, and endless options are available to give your home a one-of-a-kind look. We see marble with bold veining and rich coloring becoming more popular. Make even more of a statement by continuing a bold marble up your wall in place of a tile backsplash. Or an entire wall of marble.

Patterned wallpaper is also making a major comeback. Bold, large-scale wallpaper designs are great options to use in place of artwork. Wallpaper can bring emotion to a space or transport us to another place altogether. Wallpaper is the perfect way to customize your space and bring your personality into your home. We can't wait to use more of it in 2023!

5. Moody Hues & Intimate Lighting

We’re continuing to add more drama and energy to our interior spaces. In addition to bold patterns, we see more dark, rich paint colors that create a moody vibe. This trend is most effective when it's done intentionally in rooms such as a den or dining room, where you want to create an entirely different feel from the other rooms in the house.

Moody hues are also featured in kitchen cabinets to create interest and depth. We love this trend because these deep, moody hues can still be subtle and timeless.

We can maximize this trend by painting a room in all one color...walls, trim, ceiling, and moldings all in the same rich tone like deep greens, blues, or burgundy. You can even take this monochromatic look one step further by using various shades of wall color in the furnishings, window treatments, and cabinetry. Very chic!

Using lighting to create a mood is also becoming more popular in 2023. You can create different moods for different activities depending on how you want to use the room. Wall sconces, picture lights, and floor lamps that provide soft ambient lighting take the stage in place of harsh overhead lights.

We are also using accent lighting in unexpected places, for example, lighting your floating shelves, back-lit mirrors, the toe-kick of your cabinetry, or even washing the face of your kitchen island with light.

6. Mixing Metals

Choosing one metal and sticking with it is an old rule that was made to be broken. And I believe this can be a missed design opportunity! Think about all the metals in your home: door hardware, cabinet hardware, stair railings, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, mirrors, table bases, chair arms, sofa legs, and decorative accessories.

Mixing metals can add depth and interest to a space, as opposed to the "matchy-matchy" look of using all the same metal finish throughout your home. Look for soft metal finishes like brushed brass or champagne gold to add warmth to a tiled bathroom or contrast to painted kitchen cabinets. We are beginning to see less of the painted matte black finish and more of the natural metal finishes of brass, nickel, copper, and bronze.

Mixed metals are on the rise, and we're excited to see more of this design technique!
